In December 2015, CIGRE-Brasil promoted a workshop about regulation of smart grids where a number of opportunities regarding future applications in Brazil were identified, mainly in the regulatory, technological and funding areas. During this event, in which many Brazilian and foreign experts presented their views, CIGRE-Brasil identified a great opportunity to promote an international seminar where people from all over the world could share their experiences. For the past few years, smart grids have been the main topic of fervent research and development at both industry and academy. Smart grids technologies are expected to enable high penetration for renewable energy, to facilitate the wide adoption of electrical vehicles, to increase the awareness and the involvement of the end-user in the energy market and to contribute to creating a sustainable lifestyle for the eco-aware, 21st century citizen. All these expected transformations shall bring with them numerous challenges and opportunities as this new scenario indicates that the electricity industry of the future will be very different from what it is today. Introduction of smart grid concepts and technologies in all contexts — generation, transmission, distribution, and commercialization — will definitely change the business model of the present electrical sector. The key theme of the seminar will be how to develop and to implement policies, incentives and technologies in order to improve regulation, yielding an electrical sector featuring lower costs, storage technologies, decarbonization, and a customer friendly insertion.
